Den här dikten är inspirerad av den amerikanska litteratur jag studerar just nu. Idén om en "angelic state" kommer dock från Platon och Pico della Mirandola. Tanken om att vi "perpetually skate on surfaces" kommer från Ralph Waldo Emerson, så även tron på "cultural self-reliance" som jag adopterat:
We are the Human Race
'Twas Gravity that pulled us down
From our Angelic state
To this old Earth on whose surface
We perpetually skate.
Not sin nor devils' trickery
Nor God, unmerciful
'Twas simple, scientific Gravity
Invisible yet beautiful.
Never to be raised again
We are the HUMAN race
Staring, always in vain,
Into the blackness of space.
We build machines that lift us high
And rebel 'gainst Gravity
Such deus ex machinas
Will never set us free.
Only our souls may yet be raised
And not by God nor science;
Not by faith in warring religions
But by cultural self-reliance.
